Max Gerber was born into a Jewish family in Zempelburg (Polish: Sępólno Krajeńskie) in the rural district of Flatow (Polish: Złotów) on 30 November 1874. Together with his wife Johanna, he ran a shop for ladies’ wear in Fürstenwalde’s Eisenbahnstraße – at number 28 as it then was. By 1942, the couple, like nearly all of Fürstenwalde’s Jews, had moved to Berlin. Johanna died there as a result of a femoral neck fracture. A few months later, on 7 July 1942, Max Gerber was deported first to the Theresienstadt Ghetto and from there, on 19 September 1942, to the Treblinka extermination camp, where he was murdered.
